He was a post office engineer in Liverpool in the early-1960's before being discovered by The Beatles during one of their lunchtime gigs at the famed Cavern Club. George Harrison thought that the 6 foot 3 inch Evans would make a great bouncer. Evans soon devoted himself body and soul to The Beatles. He left his wife, Lily, and their children for long stretches of time to be on the road with them. He moved to the same neighborhood as John, Paul, George, and Ringo and, after The Beatles retired from touring, he helped the group with some lyrics and performed instrumentation on a few Beatles albums in addition to appearing in three of the five Beatles movies. He was one of the magicians in the movie "Magical Mystery Tour," he played the organ on their 1965 album "Rubber Soul," he sounded the alarm clock in "A Day in the Life" and it was Mal who banged the silver hammer. He was such a part of the Beatles inner circle that he was one of only two people to witness the 1969 wedding of Paul McCartney and Linda Eastman. Around 1974, Evans quit his position at Apple Corp. (The Beatles' then-fledgling corporate enterprise), left his wife and children and moved to Los Angeles with his girlfriend, Fran Hughes. Though he left his family, he reportedly missed them terribly as well as The Beatles, whom he considered his second family. He was reportedly depressed at how his life turned out after The Beatles breakup and the physical distance from everyone didn't help. He also began reportedly drinking heavily and using drugs. On January 5, 1976, Hughes called 911, fearing that Mal would commit suicide after locking himself in the bathroom. Police arrived on the scene and broke into the bathroom when Evans reportedly pointed a gun (or air rifle) that he was holding at police. He was shot six times and died instantly. At the time of his death, he was writing his autobiography, "Living with the Beatles Legend," which was due to be delivered to his publisher on January 12.
