Mattie was the daughter of Thomas C. Pittard and Susan A. McLeroy. She married Sanford Lawson King on January 12, 1908 in Madison County Georgia. They had six children, an unnamed infant, Ula Mae, Paul, Irene, Rumelle and Joseph, only three survived to adulthood.

Mattie was my Mother-in-Law, a very kind and gracious lady. I will never forget the first time I met her, I was scared to death, even though I had dated before I had never been carried to meet a guys Mother, and I more or less felt like I was fighting a loosing battle from the start, before she had already had a daughter-in-law, if it had not been for Katherine, her granddaughter, I don't if I would have made it or not. Kay, as she was called, had a knot in her chain necklace, and since I had long fingernails I was able to get it out for her, I truly think that saved the day. 'Granny' was all that I ever called Mattie. She was loved and respected by all who knew her.
