Born to a family of peasants on April 21, 1939 in Proboj, Herzegovina, Mladen Čuvalo finished elementary school in Vitina and high school in Split, Sinj and Visoko. He entered the Franciscan Order July 14, 1959 in Humac and completing his philosophical and theological studies in Visoko and Sarajevo, was ordained priest on July 10, 1966. Arriving in the United States on March 16, 1967, after studying English in Washington DC., he was named assistant pastor at SS. Cyril and Methodius parish in New York and eventually its pastor in 1972. During that time the the parish was relocated to the new and more adequate building and Croatian Highland in New Jersey was purchased. He remained as pastor until 1979. Successively, he spent periods in Beaver Falls, Norval, Cleveland, Ohio and Fronhletain, Austria. He succumbed to incurable cancer on September 7, 1991 in Chicago. Father Mladen's remains a highly popular figure among the Croatian emigres in America, to whom he always acted as a staunch supporter. Moreover, he worked hard to raise human rights awareness for fellow Croatians back home. Facing various difficulties through the years, including particularly serious ones, his efforts remain appreciated by many to this day.
