In the early morning hours of Tuesday, February 6, 1996, Avanesian's husband set fire to the family's one-bedroom apartment, killing her and their six children, all Iranian refugees. The services were held at Hollywood Hills' Hall of Liberty, with an attendance estimated at over 1,200 people. The funeral was the largest multiple Forest Lawn service ever performed.
