Founder of Bell Petroleum Co. located near Santa Fe Springs (outside Los Angeles) and owner of substantial developments of crude oil in the Santa Maria Valley. Developer of Los Angeles Westside communities, including Westwood, Beverly Hills, Pacific Palisades and Bel-Air (which was named for him) from the oil profits. Contributed to later development expansion of Occidental College in Eagle Rock and pioneer of the University of California, Los Angeles Westwood Village campus. Father of Alphonzo Bell, Jr., United States Congressman.
