Thilo Bode joined the Kriegsmarine in 1936. He served as an officer on the destroyer Z 6 Theodor Riedel from June 1940 to March 1942. Bode then joined the U-boat force and went through training until Sept 1942.

Thilo Bode was the First Watch Officer (1WO) on the U-505 from Sept 1942 to March 1943. He then went through U-boat commander course until May 1943. He then returned as the 1WO on U-505 until August 1943.

From Aug to Sept Kptlt. Thilo Bode went through U-boat familiarization (Baubelehrung) until Sept. He then commissioned the U-858 on 30 Sept 1943. On the boat he went out on 2 patrols. At the end of his second patrol in US waters he surrendered his boat to the US Navy at Cape May, New Jersey, USA on 14 May 1945.
