Barbara Shaw Akers 85 of Bassett died Friday March 2, 2012 at her home. She was born in Martinsville on February 19, 1927. The daughter of the late Clifford Shaw and the late Este (Fanny Esther) Goode Shaw. She was also preceded in death her husband Jim Akers, brother Tom Shaw and sister Alice Meloncon. Barbara was a member of Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church and was Baptized there in 1942 by Dr. Joe Johnson . Barbara was a member of the National Beta Club during high school and graduated of Bassett High School in 1943. She attended Madison College and graduated in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science Degree and was a member of Alpha Omicron Chapter of Pi Kappa Sigma Sorority, member of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society and the Delta Pi Epsilon sorority. She went to work at the Langley Air Force base as a secretary. After returning to Bassett she worked for CEO of Stanly Furniture and then was a teacher at Bassett High School for 32 years and during that time she received her Master's of Science degree from Virginia tech in 1982. Surviving three sons James Brooks Akers, Jr. of Bluefield,Va, Richard "Dickie" Shaw Akers of Bassett and Stephen Clifford Akers of Blue Ridge, 5 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Visitation will be Monday March 5 from 6-8 at Bassett Funeral Service. Funeral Services will be conducted Tuesday march 6 at 1:00 p.m. at Bassett Funeral Service chapel with Rev. Jim Hewitt officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Burial Park.
