Obituary from Ruck Funeral Home: Samuel R. Krauss passed away February 20, 2013. Born in the family home on East 23rd Street on June 18, 1916 he was the fifth of seven children of the late Samuel and Mable Krauss. He played lacrosse at Baltimore City College, graduating in 1935. prior to World War II, he worked as an electric arc welder. He entered the army in 1943 and after training was assigned to the famed 29th Division. Mr. Krauss was part of the second wave of troops to land on Omaha beach on D-Day as part of Company A 116th Infantry. He advanced through heavy fighting to St. Lo, France where he was wounded in the right shoulder. After the war he went into sales, first with Shepherd Electric Company, then with Sabin Robbins Paper Company, completeing his career with Budacz Furniture on Eastern Avenue. His true passion was an active member of several veterans' organizations. he has been a member of the Hamilton post of the American Legion for over 65 years, having held several offices including Vice Commander. He was a long time member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, serving several terms as Post Commander of Unity Post 751. Mr. Krauss has 65 years as a member of Baltimore Post 1 of the 29th Division Association. Over the years he has served as post Commander, Regional Commander, and as National Commander (1962-63). In 1964 he led the association's first trip back to Europe to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of D Day as well as visit battlefields and training sites. he has returned to France on several more occasions with the association. Mr. Krauss is survived by his son Michael Krauss of North Carolina, sister Shirley Howard of Annapolis, Maryland, step-son Gregory Kline and his wife Robin of Massachusetts. Also by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by wives Dorothy ( nee lavin) and Lillian.

A funeral service will be held at the family owned Leonard J. Ruck, Inc. Funeral Home 5305 Harford Road (at Echodale) on Monday at 1:00pm. Interment Moreland Memorial park. Friends may call on Sunday 2-4 & 6-8pm.
