Mr. Allen was the owner and operator of W. H. Allen Bookseller with his wife Anna in the city of Philadelphia. After graduating from Columbia University in 1908 he worked for Oxford University Press, American Branch and F. C. Stechert, importer. In 1918 he established his own second-hand book business which he conducted chiefly by mail with college libraries and faculties and students in the humanities. He was a member of THE CLIQUE and the ABA (Int.) and was known to his friends in the trade as a painstaking, honest bookseller rather than a man of business. After his death of leukemia his wife continued the business and then their son George took over. Although no longer in the family, the business still operates to this day.
