He was a leader in the formation of the Old Settler's Society, serving as chairman; trustee of the Buffalo Insane Asylum; a founder of the Orphan asylum; a founding member of the Young Men's Association, and its treasurer; the Fine Arts Academy; and other literary and benevolent societies.
