During college, he played as a member of the 1983 national champion Miami Hurricanes, beating Nebraska in January of 1984 in the Orange Bowl. A strong gust of wind knocked Stanley out of his boat and into the water off the coast line of Florida. After a half hour search in the water, his body was discovered floating face down, while still holding his sun glasses in his hand.
