Mother of Pope John Paul II . She was a daughter of a Krakow upholsterer. She married Pope's father in 1906. She suffered from inflammation of both heart and kidney. She died on April 13, 1929 when Karol was eight. The pope's adoration of his young mother is well-known. He has said she was "the soul of home." When she died, his father took him to Kalwaria, a Marian shrine close to Wadowice. Karol's lifelong devotion to the Virgin began on that trip after he lost his mother.
