Albert Jasper Rickard was born in Indiana to Lorenzo Henry Rickard and Catherine DePue. The name was spelled "Record" at the time, but everyone eventually reverted to what is presumed to be its original spelling of "Rickard."

Albert was recruited by the Michigan Sharpshooters during the Civil War. Recruits had to be 18 years old, but circumstances permitted younger boys to volunteer; however, some failed to obtain the requisite concession. Three boys including Albert, all of whom were underage, were discharged after their parents made personal applications for their discharge. Albert subsequently enlisted in the 128th Indiana Infantry where his brother George W. Rickard served for the length of the war. Albert was still underage at the time!

Albert married Amanda Smith, daughter of Henry and Mariah Smith. They had land in Carlton Township, Barry County, MI adjacent to Amanda's parent's land. They later relocated to Stanton, Montcalm County. He worked as a day labourer and carpenter.

He and Amanda had the following children:

Martha (Mattie) M., 1868 - 1875
Rosa Belle, 1871 - ?
Edward Neal, 1874 - 1946
Geneva F., 1878 - 1921
Lewis H., 1885 - 1939
