John Howard Rasmussen was born November 9, 1928 and grew up in Worcester, Massachusetts. His father was an immigrant from Denmark, and his mother's parents were from Sweden. After graduating from high school, John joined the U.S. Navy and served as a radioman in the Philippines and San Diego for three years, two months and nine days.
John accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior as a boy. While in the Navy, he surrendered his life completely to the Lord and obeyed a call to missionary service. He attended Prairie Bible Institute in Alberta, Canada, where he met his future wife.
John had a keen desire to use his artistic, photographic and journalistic talents to produce Christian literature. The Rasmussens served with the Sudan Interior Mission from 1954 to 1958 on the staff of a Christian magazine in Nigeria, Africa.
In 1960 the Rasmussens went to Costa Rica as missionaries with the the Latin America Mission. John was art director of the literature division of the Mission for nine years. For 22 years he was in charge of public relations at the Mission's headquarters in the States.
Diagnozed with Parkinson's disease in 1986, John's health deteriorated slowly. He took early retirement in 1992. John and his wife moved to a retirement community in Florida in 1996. John became a resident of the health care center in September 2008.
The Lord called John home to heaven just before daybreak on the morning of March 27. He is survived by his wife, three children, 13 grandchildren and 4 great granddaughters. His daughter Carol predeceased him in 2003. His only sibling, Betty, died last year.
