His band's The Bad Penny Blues was the first British jazz record to make its way into the top 20 after its release in 1956.
Humphrey Richard Adeane Lyttelton was born on 23 May, 1921, into an aristocratic family - his grandfather was the Lord Lyttelton, 8th Viscount Cobham - and he was born and schooled at Eton where his father was a housemaster.
Although he was an accomplished jazz trumpeter and band leader who hosted the only surviving jazz programme on the BBC he is perhaps best known for the anarchic 'I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue' which he presented for more than 40 years on BBC Radio 4 becoming a national name. For forty years he got away with some of the most rudest double entendres ever heard on radio and all revolving around the non-existant "Beautiful Samantha" the score keeper on the show.
He had been admitted into hospital earlier in the week for surgery to repair an aortic aneurysm.
