Mary was the daughter of Otto and Caroline Babel. She married Joseph F. Achatz on January 29, 1944. They were married 60 years. Mary was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church all of her life. She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella and a volunteer for Holy Cross School and Church events over the years. Before she was married, Mary worked at the Detroit Gasket Company in Marine City and during her marriage she worked 12 years for Dancer's Department Store. A devoted mother who loved raising her five children, Mary was also a proud grandmother of 10 grandchildren and a great-grandson.
Mary is survived by her children, Calvin (Wynne) Achatz, Gayle (Mark) Walker, Joe (Brenda) Achatz, Fred (Kathy) Achatz, and son-in-law, Darrell Mayo; grandchildren, Jacob Achatz, Jayme (Gordon) Lanker, Jim (Maria) Achatz, Joe Alan Achatz, Mark Walker, Emily Walker, Katelyn Achatz, and John Achatz; great-grandson, Koen Lanker; and her brother, Gerald (Mary) Babel. She was preceded in death by husband, Joseph F. Achatz; daughter, Carrie Mayo; granddaughter, Dawn Achatz; grandson, Wyatt Walker; and 5 brothers and 2 sisters.
Mary's father was always very special to her and she always looked up to him for how he encouraged and complimented her in all the things she did and for whom the person she was. His gentle and loving approval of everything she did pleased her so that she carried his strength and gentle loving ways with her throughout her life as an example and guidance.
Mary had many interests and hobbies such as cooking for her family and being famous for making the best Jell-O desserts of anyone you ever knew, and that was a special delight of hers. She also loved making homemade jellies and jams and would always be sure to ask if you needed one from her latest batch. She liked canning and freezing garden vegetables and fruits. She had fun making wine to enjoy at home or to give as gifts. Crocheting was also a favorite hobby of which all of her children have crocheted snowflakes to decorate their Christmas trees each year to remember the joy she had in doing that for them. She also enjoyed playing Scrabble and Rummy whenever possible and was very good at both.
Mom was a great role model in that she was totally unselfish, kind, and had a gentle, loving manner about her. She gave in abundance, from the heart, all the love and support we needed without even having to say a word. You just knew through her goodness and example that her inner soul always shined through and her smile would warm you like no other. She will be remembered always and forever with endearing love. Thank you mom for all you are and ever will be in our lives.
XOXOXO from your Loving Family.
A Very Special Thank You to Mom's Caregivers. Your caring tenderness was greatly appreciated and will always be remembered.
