Joshua Slocum
Birth: Feb. 20, 1844
Death: Nov. 14, 1909

Adventurer, Author. Born in Annapolis County, Nova Scotia, he was a writer who became America's best known sailor and the first to circumnavigate or sail alone around the world. In 1865, he settled in San Francisco, became an American citizen, working on fishing trade ships and later became a pilot of a sea schooner. Between 1869 and 1889, he was the master of eight vessels, sailing points from the Pacific to Atlantic Oceans. During this whole time, he would convert his log entries into books of his sea experiences. With the desire to sail the globe alone, he bought and rebuilt the 36' 9? gaff rigged sloop the Spray in 1892. On April 24, 1895, he departed from Boston Harbor and officially ended his voyage more than 46,000 miles later at Newport, Rhode Island, on June 27, 1898. In 1899, he published his account of the epic voyage in "Sailing Alone Around the World" first serialized in "Century Magazine" and then in several book-length editions. In November 1909, Slocum on the Spray, set sail for the West Indies on a winter voyage and was never heard from again. There is a cenotaph for Slocum at Cooke Memorial Park in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
