Grace Bernstein Abramson, who assisted her husband in his dental surgery practice, died of congestive heart failure Friday at the Connecticut Hospice in Branford, Conn. The former Village of Cross Keys resident was 90.
Born Grace Bernstein in Baltimore and raised on Cottage Avenue, she was a 1932 Western High School graduate. She was 15 when she left Western and had an academic scholarship to Goucher College.
"Because of the Depression, she was unable to accept it," said her daughter, Gay Silberg of Naples, Fla. "She then went to work for Sun Life Insurance instead."
At age 20 she married Dr. Irving Abramson, a dentist who specialized in endodontia, or root canal therapy. She managed his Medical Arts Building office for many years before he retired in 1985.
She later attended classes at Goucher College and the Johns Hopkins University. She was a Baltimore Museum of Art member and subscriber to the Baltimore Symphony, Center Stage and the Philadelphia Orchestra.
Because of illness, she left Baltimore in 2006 and moved to Connecticut. Graveside services were held Sunday.
In addition to her daughter, survivors include another daughter, Jane A. Cohen of New Haven, Conn.; a sister, Dorothy Leibowitz of Baltimore; two granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren. Her husband of nearly 66 years died in 2003.
