Viola H. Alvar, 84, of Duluth passed away peacefully at St. Mary's Hospice with her family by her side on Jan. 20, 2006. Viola was born in Duluth on Sept. 11, 1921 to Henry and Heyla Hill. For many years she worked as a housekeeper at the home of Dr. Sandford. Viola was fond of crossword puzzles, playing cards with friends, and playing board games with her grandchildren. She dearly loved her church and was a faithful member of French River Lutheran. She was an active member of Homesteaders and played the kazoo in the Rainbow Band. A beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, she will always be cherished in remembrance for her warm heart, constant smile, and gracious spirit. Viola is survived by her children, Anne (Gary) Spence, Gene (Claudia) Alvar, Geraldine Duncan Jr., Henry (Mary) Alvar; grandchildren, Lauri (Rob) Schamberger, Teri (Greg) Carlson, Melanie (Jesse) Alvar Buetow, Heidi (Dan) Spence Gebbie, Scott Spence, Mandy Alvar and great-grandchildren, Nolan and Isabel Schamberger, Chloe and Mya Carlson.
