Explorer, surveyor, politician. He moved to Australia in 1829. He explored and surveyed enormous areas of Queensland, Western Australia, and New South Wales. Afterwards he was made surveyor-general for Queensland before finally becoming a member of the Queensland legislative assembly. In 1858 he was awarded the gold medal by the royal geographical society and was created a K.C.M.G in 1903.
