Daughter of John Lowry and Alvina Hendrickson Dunckel, Thelma was born in Minnesota but her family soon migrated west to North Dakota and then Montana. She married Gawin Earl Douglass, only son of famous paleontologist Earl Douglass, in Salt Lake City on December 27, 1933. Gawin would eventually settle in California and work for a gold mining company. The couple had two children: Mary Margaret and Doris Dianne Douglass. The couple spent their final few years in the community of Hardin, Montana living near daughter Mary who was a nurse with the Public Health Service at the Northern Cheyenne Reservation. She and her husband are buried next to one another.
