Even though her headstone states that she was born in 1873, at least five different census records for the State of New York and the United States place Anna's birth at December, 1880. Anna and her sister Nellie were orphans born in New York City to two German tightrope walkers whose last name was "Kaiser". They worked with the Barnum and Bailey Circus and the cause of their deaths is unknown. Somehow Anna and her sister both ended up in Troy, New York where they were both adopted. Anna was adopted by Clarence and Alice Allen Gifford. Nellie was adopted by Frederic and Celeste Allen Slocum from Easton. Alice and Celeste were sisters and reared the girls living next door to one another.

Anna met and married a local dentist, Harry Clifford Elting in 1908 at Bennington, Vermont. They lived for a while at Troy, but then moved back to the Easton area. This couple also adopted a child, son Clifford who was born in 1909. Anna lived to be in her nineties and died at a nursing home in Schuylerville. Her nephew, George Scott took care of her arrangements. She was cremated and her ashes were buried beside her husband at Easton, New York.
