Son of James Harmon (1784-1835) and his wife, Mary Lester Harmon (1786-1864) of Newberry County, South Carolina. Wesley, along with his uncle, George Harmon, was among the first settlers in what became known as Harmontown, Mississippi. He moved to the area before Mississippi statehood with his widowed mother and her sister Sarah who was George Harmon's wife. Wesley married Lavernia Ann Cain about 1841 and fathered four children: George C. "Chick", James H., Bethany, and Sarah Isabelle "Tusie Belle". The 1860 Census stated that Wesley was blind. Descendants speculate that he may have had macular degeneration.
