Beloved Brother Mathes:
We are called to lament the loss of one of our members, Sister Camelia Acuff, eldest daughter of Robert and Nancy Acuff of this place. She is with us no more. She left her clay tenement in the first of May 1857, having been released by the withering hand of consumption, at the age of 17 years, 7 months, and 22 days. Sister Camelia was a devoted member of the Christian Church to which she had belonged for more than two years.
Just before her death she called the family to her and distributed her many little articles to her sisters and brothers, which to them will long remain as mementos of the kindness of their departed sister. She spoke freely to them of her departure, and to all with whom she conversed, assuring them that she was prepared for the change, for which she patiently waited, exhorting them to make preparation to meet her above. Could you have seen the resignation, which she manifested, it would no doubt have inspired you with increased vigor to labor for the prize of eternal life, as it did many who witnessed her tranquility. She often inquired of her Father, who sat by her side, how long he thought it would be before she would go hence.
When the hour of her departure had arrived, she maintained full confidence in the redeemer; and it may be truly said, The voice of death was sweet, Which bid her haste away, In Christ the Lord she fell asleep, While hope's undying ray Beamed on her pathway to the sky, Through which her slumbering form shall rise.
Your brother in Christ Jesus,
J. S. Tibbet
