A memorial service for Marilyn Wood Adams, 70, of Garland, is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007, at the First Presbyterian Church of Athens with the Rev. Joe Warren officiating.
Marilyn was born in Athens on July 12, 1936, to the late Archie F. Wood Jr. and Mary Alice Wren Wood. She departed this life on Feb. l4, 2007, after a courageous battle with cancer.
A 1954 graduate of Athens High School, Marilyn attended Texas Tech University and graduated from The University of Houston. After residing in Houston for a number of years, she made her home in Garland while maintaining close ties with her many friends in Athens. She was a longtime executive with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, retiring in1991. A member of the First Presbyterian Church of Athens, she first joined her beloved church at age 10 on Easter Sunday 1946, and transferred her membership back to her Athens church home following retirement.
Marilyn was an enthusiastic world traveler, having traveled throughout most of Eastern and Western Europe and North America. She had been a proud member of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. Until her health began to fail, she worked diligently with her college social sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha.
A descendant of one of Athens' oldest pioneer families, Marilyn was the great-great-granddaughter of Dr. Thomas Boucher Wood, Athens' first physician, who moved to Athens shortly after 1850. Dr. Wood settled his family northeast of downtown, where the pioneer Wood Cemetery is located and where Wood Street runs through the original family farm. Marilyn's grandparents, Archie F. Wood Sr. and Annie Ackerman Wood, had the distinction of hosting a banquet for President William Howard Taft in 1910 in their home on East Tyler Street, the only time a U.S. President visited Athens.
Marilyn is survived by her brother, Wren Wood; and her three sons, Mark and wife Joyce of Houston, Michael and wife Pamela of Plano, and Matthew and wife Michelle of Plano, and by grandchildren, Kristin and Megan Adams of Houston, and Blake, Brett and Brock Adams of Plano.
