William, a printer by trade like his father, was a member of the "Richmond Grays" militia outfit and went with them as part of Company "A", 1st Virginia Infantry in April 1861. He was discharged in July 1861, but later enlisted from Richmond as a Corporal into Crenshaw's Battery of Virginia Light Artillery (later also known as Ellett's Company, V.L.A.) on 14 March 1862.

He was wounded at Rixeyville, Virginia on 8 November 1863, and at Jericho Ford, Virginia on 23 May 1864, after which he was hospitalized at the Wayside Hospital (a.k.a. General Hospital #9) in Richmond. He was promoted Sergeant on 13 November 1863. He took the Oath of Allegiance on 18 April 1865.

After the War, he worked in the newspaper business in New York City for many years. He died of "Pneumonia," per Cemetery records.
