Jacob enlisted as a Private in Company "G", 3rd Richmond Local Defense Troops (RLDT) on 28 June 1863. He later enlisted in Company "I", 2nd Virginia Infantry Reserves on 30 November 1863.
He married Rosa Faircloth on 16 May 1869. They had one child, Annie Lee (b. April 1870).
Jacob's grave was marked in October 2022 through the efforts of the "Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemetery," and with the generous assistance of the Virginia Division, Children of the Confederacy.
