Allen enlisted from the Spartansburg area as 5th Corporal in Co. "D", 3rd South Carolina Infantry, on 14 April 1861. He was 25.
Later promoted Sergeant, Allen was wounded in the battle of Savage's Station on 29 June 1862. He died while being treated at the Jackson Hospital in western suburbs of Richmond.
