He was the 1st New Zealand Soldier to die under fire in Afghanistan. He served as part of the peace keeping force in Timor, where he was awarded The New Zealand Distinguished Service Decoration. An IED was detonated and then the patrol came under fire from two positions with rocket-propelled grenades and other small arms fire.
