VESPER — Elmer Abel, 70, Fifield, former owner and operator of Midwest Retinning in Vesper, died Tuesday morning at Flambeau Medical Center in Park Falls. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Wilkinson Mortuary in Wisconsin Rapids, with the Rev. Rudolph Schulze officiating. Burial will in the Port Edwards Municipal Cemetery. Friends may call after 6 p.m. today and until time of services Friday at the mortuary. Mr. Abel was born May 24, 1912 in the Town of Grand Rapids to Mr. and Mrs. John Abel. A journeyman electrician, he worked at Consolidated Papers Inc. in Wisconsin Rapids for 10 years until 1942, when he worked at the Manitowoc shipyards for four years. He returned to the Wisconsin Rapids area in 1949 and was owner and operator of the Midwest Retinning, Vesper, until 1961. He then moved to Milwaukee and retired in 1974. He married the former Dorothy Turner July 31, 1935 in Wisconsin Rapids. She survives. Other survivors include two sons Larry, Pewaukee, and John, Nekoosa: a sister, Margaret Siewert, Stevens; Point; and three grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother.
