Son of Linnie Witty and John Everett Adkins. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps on 19 Nov 1940 and graduated from aircraft mechanic training within one year. News articles provide that he served as crew member on a B-24 during low level raids at Ploesti oil fields in 1944.

Research reflects that, after WWII he re-enlisted in the Army Air Force on 22 Oct 1945. He retired from the U.S. Air Force with the rank of Master Sergeant.

He married Helen Beals and they had one son. His obituary in the Greensboro Daily News (NC) - January 2, 1978, provides that he was survived by his wife; son, John Jr.; brothers, William W. of Greenville, S.C., James E. of Winston-Salem; sisters, Mrs. Virginia McBryde of Reidsville, Mrs. John Jones of Sumter, S.C., Mrs. Paul D. Wilson of Summerfield.
