Obituary extract from the Greensboro News & Record (NC) - October 2, 1998

Lucas C. "Brother" Abels, Jr., devoted husband, father and athlete, died Wednesday, Sept. 30, 1998 at Duke University Medical Center after a faithful life ignoring the shadows of malignant disease. Lucas, known by his family as "Brother", inspired his many friends and associates as an 18 year survivor of Hodgkin's Disease.

Born September 1, 1954 and a graduate of Page High School, he attended Montreat-Anderson Junior College, Greensboro College and UNC-G. Employed by Procter and Gamble as a Quality Assurance Contract leader, Lucas earned a nationwide circle of professional colleague friends.

A devoted soccer dad, Lucas and his wife, Susan traveled extensively in support of their son's classic soccer club. His athletic pursuits included tennis, golf, scuba diving, cycling, skiing and family camping. Lucas was an annual participant in the Tour to Tanglewood and participated in a wide spectrum of cancer support activities.

Faced with a new diagnosis of incurable mesothelioma, Lucas spent his final months immersed in life with his family, living each day with undaunted courage and an irrespressible outlook that we will cherish for the rest of our lives.

He is survived by his loving wife, Susan Martin Abels; son, Luke Abels, III; mother, Mrs. Nell Davis Abels; sister and brother-in-law Julia Sypher and Rob Sypher; father and mother-in-law, Herb and Ann Martin; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Phil and Donna Martin; five nieces, Reid and Ellen Hartzoge, Liz and Alex Sypher, and Heather Martin. He was pre-deceased by his father, Mr. Clarence Abels, Sr.
