Alfonso L Allen, colored, of 1412 Mulberry Street, died this morning in a Cleveland, Ohio hospital after an illness lasting two weeks, local relatives learned today. He was the son of the late John R and Susan Allen. The body will be brought here to the Fletcher Funeral Home.
Mr. Allen was a World War veteran who served 11 months, and was 26 days in the trenches. He entered the service here August 1, 1918, and went to Camp Dodge. Alfonso Leslie Allen, formerly of Galesburg, died in a hospital in Cleveland, Ohio at 4 o'clock on Wednesday morning. He was the son of the late John R and Susan Allen, and was born in Galesburg, November 5, 1892. He received his education in the city schools, attended Weston School. He was employed as a cook at the Union and Custer hotels and at the Galesburg Club, and later followed this profession in Cincinnati and Cleveland, being for many years employed at the Cincinnati Masonic temple and on the New York Central railroad. He left Galesburg in 1922 for Cincinnati, and resided in Cleveland the past three years.
During the World War, on July 31, 1918, he entered the US service at Camp Dodge, IA and was discharged July 24, 1919 at Camp Grant after serving eleven months overseas as Sergeant with Company B, 809th Pioneer Infantry. He was a member of St. John's AME Church in Cleveland, Ohio.
His parents preceded him in death. He leaves five sisters and one brother, namely Mrs. Eva Solomon, Mrs. Margherita Fleming, Miss Glaze Allen, Mrs. Susan Rodgers and Harold Allen of Galesburg, and Mrs. Ethel Dawson of Rock Island, who is seriously ill at this time. Other survivors include an uncle, George Cannon, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Albertha Allen, three nephews and two nieces, all of this city, and several cousins.
The body arrived in Galesburg Thursday night, accompanied by his sister, Mrs. Fleming. Funeral rites will be held at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon from Allen Chapel, AME Church, the Rev AE McWhorter in charge.
