Crystal Falls Men Badly Burned by a Powder Explosion
Crystal Falls, Mich., Feb 1. - B.C. Waters and Russell Ball, merchant and clerk, respectively, are suffering from badly burned hands as a result of trying to clean a sooty chimney with gun powder. On discovering that the chimney was blocked with the soot, the clerk was sent to an adjoining hardware store for powder and returned with both hands full. It was the intention to throw but a little of the explosive in the stove, and while Waters raised the lid Ball shook his hands over the fire. Immediately there was a blaze which ignited the remainder of the powder, blowing the doors off the stove and burning the two men. A chimney sweep finished the job.
