Alan Abelson spent 57 years as a writer, editor and chief columnist for financial news publication Barron's. He was a veteran financial journalist, and longtime writer of the influential Up and Down Wall Street column in Barron's Magazine. Abelson began writing Up and Down Wall Street in 1966 and the column became a weekly mainstay of the publication for nearly half a century. He was still writing the column up until his medical leave three months ago. He was editor of Barron's from 1981 until 1992. Abelson's columns have sometimes spawned controversy and even lawsuits. While working for Barron's, he was responsible for editing the Investment News & Views section and writing corporate and industry features. From July 1982 - October 1990, Ableson frequently appeared on NBC-TV's News at Sunrise as a business commentator. Prior to working for Barron's, Abelson worked as a copy boy for the New York Journal- American. He eventually worked his way up to becoming a reporter and then onto the financial desk. Abelson obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry and English from City College of New York and later received his Master's degree from the University of Iowa in creative writing.
