George Herbert Burges was educated at Winchester and then proceeded to Merton College, University of Oxford from which he graduated with a BA in 1887.

On 22 November 1889, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in 1891, Captain in 1901, and Major in 1907. He rose to the rank of Lt. Colonel (but is commemorated among the casualties of the Great War as a Colonel) and became commanding officer of the Gloucestershire Regiment's 3rd (Reserve) Battalion.
