He was educated at Berkhamsted School and gazetted from Royal Military College, Sandhurst (20 October 1915) as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Lincolnshire Regiment. He was seconded to the Royal Flying Corps in February 1916 and was tragically killed at 18 years of age in a flying accident.

"In loving memory of Geoffrey Wynne Bavin, 2nd Lieut. Lincolnshire Regt., Flying Officer R.F.C., who was killed while flying at Upavon April 1 1916 in his 19 year. 'When his master called him for promotion he found him at his post'. In happy and beloved memory of his father John Thomas Bavin who died June 20 1937 aged 67. And in loving memory of his mother Grace Bavin who died on Dec 8 1939 aged 68. 'In death they were not divided'."
