Captain Osmond Donald Blunt, whose parents were Sir John Elijah Blunt and Fanny Janet (Sandison) Blunt (also known as Lady Blunt), was educated at University of Oxford. In 1893, he was commissioned in the 2nd Battalion, Connaught Rangers. He served in Cyprus, Malta, Egypt, Crete, the Sudan, and South Africa. He was a veteran of the Second Boer War.
