Son of Colonel Sir Valentine Augustus Browne (4th Earl of Kenmare), KP, PC and Gertrude Harriet (Thynne) Browne.

Brother of Lady Margaret Theodora May Catherine (Browne) Douglas and Hon. Cecil Augustine Browne.

Husband of Elizabeth (Baring) Browne.

Father of Lady Dorothy Margaret Browne, Lady Cecilia Kathleen Browne, Captain Valentine Edward Charles Browne (6th Earl of Kenmare), Lieutenant Hon. Maurice Henry Dermot Browne, and Captain Gerald Ralph Desmond Browne (7th Earl of Kenmare).

In 1904, he was invested a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO). In 1905, upon his father's death, he became 5th Earl of Kenmore and 11th Baronet (Browne of Mohaliffe, County Kerry).

During World War One, he served as a temporary major in the Royal Munster Fusiliers, and later became colonel of the regiment's 3rd Battalion. Afterward, he became colonel of the 8th Battalion of the Liverpool Regiment.

Post-war, he served as a member of the Irish Senate.
