On Halloween day in 1955, Stephen's mother, Marilyn Damman, left her 2-year-old son and 7-month-old daughter, Pamela, outside a Long Island, New York bakery in a baby carriage while she went inside to shop. Ten minutes later, Marilyn came out of the bakery and could not find the stroller or her children. After searching the neighborhood for 15 minutes the stroller was found around the corner, with her daughter still in the baby carriage. 2-year-old Stephen Damman was gone. During the 28 hour search, over 2,000 people participated but Stephen was nowhere to be found. Assistant chief inspector Leslie W. Pearsall called off the search after 28 hours. Stephen Damman was never seen again.
