Born in Boston to Nathan Travis and Maria Cornell (Blake) Fessenden. Civil War Veteran - Co. E, 78th Illinois Infantry is engraved on his gravestone. When he enlisted, he is described as being 5 ft., 9 in. tall, with brown hair, blue eyes and dark complexion. His occupation is given as a cooper, but he was later a tinsmith and also a Baptist clergyman. He lived in Missouri for several years before homesteading about 2 1/2 miles northeast of Merna, Nebraska, where he died.

He married in 1854 1st, Fanny (Carter). Charles and Fanny had four children - Sarah, James Henry, Travis Nathan and Mary Ellen. Fanny died sometime before 1866.

Charles married 2nd, Rebecca Isabell Perrigo Hoover/Hover, widow of Josiah Hoover/Hover, with one child (Emily or Emma). They had 9 children - William J., Martin Robert, Rebecca Ann, Harriet Bell (died young), Charles Blake, Clarence Owen, Otis Owen, John Wesley (died young) and Nettie. Rebecca died in 1885.

Charles then married 3rd, Sarah Ann (Perrigo) Schurr, reportedly a cousin of Rebecca. No children have been identified from this marriage.

All together, Charles had three wives and 13 children.
