George was born in Rockford, IL,to George and Mary Dewey. His father, born in Vermont, was age 64 when George was born. His mother, Mary, was age 25. The family lived in Rockford, IL, removing to Wabaunsee Co., KS, sometime between 1870 and 1879, where his father died on 11 Dec 1879.

On May 9, 1880, he married Mary Alice Sweeney. The couple removed to Custer Co., NE, probably in the mid-1880s. He served on the County Board, as well as Custer County Clerk & Assessor. He lived on his original homestead near Gates for 63 years.

He was survived by his wife, four sons, three daughters, 33 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
