David was the eldest son of Thomas and Mary (Scott) Blakeslee. Thomas was the first Captain of the Northbury trainband, the local militia, and David was a captain after his father. David married Phebee Todd in 1743. The following year, they had a son Thomas, and Phebee died a few weeks after the birth. David married 2nd Abigail Howe in 1752, and they had six children, Adna, Eli, Asa, David, Phebe, Ede and Bede. David lived on his father's place where he kept tavern. Adna, who attained to the distinction of major, married Hannah Graves and lived on the old Blakeslee place below the case shop.

In Dec. 1776, David encouraged his son Asa, then twenty years old, to leave Waterbury in order to escape conscription. He was therefore assessed for the support of a soldier, but died before the tax was collected.
