My Great Grandfather

ROYAL CANADIAN ARMY

He was the son of George and Margaret ~ The husband of Daisy ~ The Father of Laura, Grace J., Carl L., & Dorothy M. ~ Grandfather of Rose Carol, Ruth, Mary, Patricia, Charles, James, Kenneth, Laura, Robert, JoAnn, Gerald, Barbara, Delores, Sandra, Gail, Brenda, & Timothy ~

The brother of John A., Sarah Jane, James Reid, Elizabeth, & Florance Grace ~ Grandson of: John & Isabella - Joseph & Sarah ~

=======

Joseph was in the ROYAL CANADIAN ARMY - UNIT 26th Bn. ~ Shot in the line of duty, this led to his untimely death ~ He had previously served with the 68th Regiment ~ His only son proudly served in the U.S. Army ~

=======

Strangely enough Joseph & Daisy were buried on the same exact date 34 years apart {Their death dates are not the same but their burial dates are, back in the day they didn't bury people till spring thaw} ~

I am fortunate enough to have a 4 page letter that Daisy wrote to Joseph while he was in the hospital ~ Just 3 weeks before his death, I also have Josephs cigarette case ~

Joseph married Daisy on Oct. 26th, 1912~

=======

Tread lightly, 'tis a soldiers grave,

A lonely, mossy mound;

And yet to hearts like mine and thine

It should be holy ground~

Speak softly, let no careless laugh,

No idle, thoughtless jest,

Escape your lips where sweetly sleeps

The hero in his rest~

For him no reveille will beat

When morning beams shall come;

For him, at night, no tattoo rolls

Its thunders from the drum~

Tread lightly! for a man bequeathed,

Ere laid beneath this sod,

His ashes to his native land,

His gallant soul to God~
