Pfc Carpenter was a member of A Company, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division.
He parachuted into Normandy at about 0130 on D-Day, June 6, 1944 and was killed in action that same day. He was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously.
