Truck Mishap Takes Life Of Artesia Man

James B. Bland, 59, 806 Runyan, Artesia, was killed last night about 9 p.m. when the tractor trailer he was driving jacknifed and he was thrown out of the truck cab and pinned under the leftside dual wheels.

State patrolman Jack Childress said the accident happened on Marathon Road, about 12 miles west of U.S. 285 west of Carlsbad. He said Bland's truck, belonging to an Artesia firm, CLM Transportation, apparently went through a stop sign at the intersection of Marathon Road and a county road and hit an embankment.

Childress said seatbelts would have prevented the fatality.

Funeral services are pending in Artesia, according to reports, for Bland who worked at one time as Eddy County Sheriff's deputy and also as an officer, in the Artesia Police Dept.
