He was born June 5, 1933, in Heyworth, the son of George B. and Jeraldine Blackburn Berendes.
He married Nina Patterson in 1952 in Springfield; she died in 1994.
He married Bonnie Shontz in 1997.
Mr. Berendes retired as southern region director of sales for Pinkerton Tobacco Co. in 1996 after 40 years and was a U.S. Army veteran. He attended Southern View Chapel.
Survivors: wife, Bonnie; son, Richard Berendes (companion, Tammy Sheets) of Niantic; two daughters, Nancy Berendes of Springfield and Judith (husband, Pete) Peterson of Fort Mills, S.C.; two stepdaughters, Tara (husband, Jay) Darst of Springfield and Tami (husband, Dan) Meyers of Kokomo, Ind.; three grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; two brothers, Charles (wife, Cathy) Berendes of Versailles and Kenneth (wife, Cheryl) Berendes of San Jose, Calif.; and sister, Barbara Berendes of Springfield.
