"The LaFayette Sun" - August 14, 1901:

The houses being erected by Messrs. J. M. and Lee Allen are now receiving the finishing touches. The buildings will be quite an addition to the North side.

"The Roanoke Leader" - March 4, 1925:

At one o'clock Monday morning, Mr. James M. Allen was taken by friends from his bed on the second floor of the Allen store building, at the southeast corner of the square in LaFayette, apparently suffocating from smoke which had filled his room from a fire which had broken out in the store room below. Every effort to revive Mr. Allen failed. He was a crippled man and about 75 years of age. He was long a prominent business man of LaFayette. He was a brother of Mrs. W.J. Landers of Roanoke, who with other relatives from this place, attended the funeral in LaFayette on Tuesday.

"The LaFayette Sun" - March 4, 1925:

J. M. Allen Dies in LaFayette Fire.

"Uncle Jim" Allen, age 78, a wealthy citizen of LaFayette, perished in the fire that destroyed one of his buildings in which he was living Sunday night about 12 o'clock. Mr. Allen had been in feeble health for some time and was confined to his bed at the time of the fire. It was at first thought that Mr. Allen had been rescued from the burning building, but he was later found a little ways from his bed, presumably having fallen when he opened the door of his room to make exit.
The blaze was discovered shortly before midnight and is believed to have originated in the rear of the building. The lower floor was occupied by Parker Brothers Grocery Co., and the second floor was used for a cafe operated by Cecil Garrett. The cause of the fire is not definitely known, but had gained considerable headway before the fire department appeared on the scene. It was quickly extinguished.
The deceased is survived by five sisters, Mrs. T. G. Bowling, Mrs. Ella Landers, Mrs. Jane Stanfield, and Mrs. John Henderson. W. L. Allen, of Opelika, a brother of the deceased, died recently while visiting relatives in North Carolina.
Funeral services were held at the Baptist Church Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the pastors of the city, Drs. Rucker, Johnson and White, officiating.
