During the 1980s, McLaren turned performing artist himself, assembling eclectic recordings that were especially popular in Great Britain. He also owned "Let It Rock", a clothing store in London, with designer and then partner Vivienne Westwood. The boutique later re-named "Too Fast To Live Too Young To Die", and then, most famously, "SEX." It was here that a young Johnny Lydon auditioned for the role of Sex Pistols' front man, miming to an Alice Cooper record "I'm Eighteen" on the jukebox. The son of Peter and Emily Isaacs McLaren, young Malcolm was raised by his grandmother, Rose Corre, who home schooled her grandson until 1955. Later education included attendance in several of England's art collages. Leaving college without a degree he opened his first London boutique in 1972. While in New York at a boutique fair, he met the members of the proto-punk group the New York Dolls, and in late 1974, he took over their management. He returned to the London clothing business in May 1975 and used what he learned with the New York Dolls in helping to assemble the Sex Pistols. From November 1976 to their breakup in January 1978, the Sex Pistols were regularly found on both the record charts and the front pages of Britain's tabloids, idolized by fans for songs like "Anarchy in the U.K." and "God Save the Queen." His reputation as a manager established, McLaren began handling other British talents, Adam and the Ants and Bow Wow Wow. During the 1980s, he began making his own records, beginning with the single "Buffalo Gals," which combined traditional folk music with hip-hop. His other 'Top 40 Hits' would include "Soweto" and "Double Dutch." In later years, he would produce and star in documentaries for the BBC television and hold exhibitions around Europe displaying his autobiographical artwork.
