Shirley Joyce Veigel Alderson, 85, of Higganum, formerly of Waterford, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 1, 2013, surrounded by loving family members.

Born in Buffalo, N.Y., on August 28, 1927, she was predeceased by her parents, Agnes Briggs Veigel and William Veigel. She attended Nottingham High School in Syracuse, NY and was a founding, and contributing member of the Crossroads Presbyterian Church in Waterford, CT. Shirley enjoyed volunteering, bible study, music, crossword puzzles, and holidays with the family.

Shirley's favorite work experience was the 11 years spent caring for the children at her daycare center. She also spent her time volunteering through church as well as for the Middlesex Cancer Center. Her greatest contribution was the unconditional love and support she provided to her family, friends, and church community.

She is survived by her four children, Lawrence Alderson, Jr. and his wife Monica, Douglas Alderson and his wife Nancy, Robert Ayala and his wife Denise, and Mariely Ayala Henry and her husband Robert Henry. She was the loving grandmother of 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She was the sister of Lois Dison and William Veigel. She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and nephews.
